EGR celebrates 15th year of school sport with a community-wide celebration

A vintage exhibition game will be held at Wealthy Field, 1961 Lake Drive, S.E., East Grand Rapids, at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 22. The 2017 East Grand Rapids team is recreating the 1905 match between Bryn Mawr College and Harvard. The price of admission is one dime per person in the spirit of the era. Spectators are encouraged to bring a picnic to the grass field or enjoy concession roasted peanuts, Cracker Jacks and hotdogs.

"Our ultimate goal is to raise awareness and spread the love of field hockey," says Jody Deems-McCargar, the event chairperson. The project, "Somewhere in Time: a 1905 Vintage Field Hockey scrimmage," has united field hockey teams across America and has inspired Bryn Mawr Field Hockey's current head coach to attend the celebration.

As Deems-McCargar shared, the historic backdrop to this 1905 match included the controversy that women should not be engaged in physical activity and the parallel Women's Suffrage movement.  During the October 22 event, drama students will portray Suffragettes with signs of the 1900s.

"The can-do spirit of America has come through in putting together a 'back in time' event," says Deems-McCargar. She welcomes everyone to attend the festivities.
